Favorite Coastlines Around the World

After spending a recent Memorial Day weekend driving along the Southern California coast, I started thinking about the many incredible shorelines I have encountered around the world and the ones that have left the strongest impression on me. While many travelers are naturally drawn to warm beaches, endless stretches of white sand, and tropical scenery, that has never really been my style. With my fair complexion and my preference for cooler weather, I have always felt more connected to rugged coastlines, rocky shores, and dramatic ocean landscapes rather than palm-lined beaches.

Although I am not someone who typically seeks out traditional beach vacations, I have always been fascinated by coastlines themselves. Every stretch of shoreline has its own personality, shaped by the meeting point between land and sea. I love observing how waves carve through rocks, how the ocean moves into the landscape, how clouds gather above the water, and how moss and plants create life along the edges of the coast.

Some of my favorite destinations around the world are located beside the ocean. There are still countless coastlines I hope to explore in the future, but these are some of the most beautiful, peaceful, and unforgettable coastal landscapes I have experienced so far.

Oahu, Hawaii

Hawaii is well known for its beautiful sandy beaches, but Oahu stands out to me because of the incredible variety found along its coastline. The island offers much more than the famous beaches of Waikiki and the North Shore, with their palm trees and warm tropical waters. On the eastern side near Hawaii Kai, dramatic rocky cliffs rise above the ocean, while the Windward Coast features enormous green mountains that almost look unreal.

My favorite areas are the rocky beaches on the northeastern side of Oahu, where powerful waves crash against dark volcanic rocks. The changing colors of the sky reflect across the open sea, and in the distance, the outline of Moloka’i can sometimes be seen beyond the horizon. These quiet coastal views capture the raw beauty and diversity of the island.

Nice, France

Many people love the French Riviera during the height of summer, when beaches are filled with visitors enjoying the sunshine. However, I find the coastline around Nice even more beautiful during the quieter months before or after the busy season. A visit in March offered ideal weather—not too cold, but also not overly warm.

The rocky cliffs east of Nice extend dramatically over the Mediterranean, creating the feeling that they are floating above the water. Along the curved shoreline of the Promenade des Anglais, the beaches become peaceful and calm, with only a few locals enjoying the scenery, cyclists passing by, and small groups of travelers taking in the views.

The movement of clouds and waves across the rocky coast creates a constantly changing atmosphere, while the warm orange tones of the buildings in southern France contrast beautifully with the deep blues and greens of the sea and sky.

Oregon Coast, USA

The Oregon Coast remains one of the most breathtaking coastal regions I have ever visited. The stretch between Cannon Beach and the area just south of Newport offers an incredible combination of natural scenery, from wide open beaches to massive sea stacks rising offshore, rugged cliffs, and rocky tide pools.

The coastline has a powerful and dramatic character that feels completely unique. While some of the small beach towns may not be the main attraction, the natural beauty of the shoreline itself is unforgettable. The combination of ocean waves, misty skies, rocky formations, and untouched landscapes makes this one of the most impressive coastal areas in the United States.

Rhode Island, USA

Although I have not explored many coastal areas along the eastern United States, a journey through New England, including Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, introduced me to some incredible ocean landscapes. Among them, the rocky coastline of Rhode Island, especially around Newport, was one of the most memorable.

What stood out most was the remarkable color palette of the region. Deep gray tones filled the ocean and sky, while pale tan rocks and cliffs were covered with layers of olive-green moss and vegetation. The coastline felt expansive, with waterways cutting into the land and bridges stretching across the sea.

The ocean here carried a powerful presence, almost as if it had the strength to reshape everything in its path. That combination of beauty and force is what makes the coastline so captivating.

St. Andrews, Scotland

St. Andrews captured my heart for many reasons. I loved its charming Scottish streets, delicious sticky toffee pudding, colorful stone buildings, and historic cathedral ruins. However, the most unforgettable part of the town was its stunning coastline.

Whether exploring the beaches near the famous Old Course, discovering rocky tide pools and viewpoints below the town, or looking out over the cliffs from the area near the cathedral ruins, every coastal view feels remarkable. The landscape changes constantly with the movement of the tides and clouds, creating a dramatic atmosphere.

The contrast between the dark rocks, endless ocean views, and moody skies gives St. Andrews a special kind of beauty. The coastline adds another layer of magic to an already fascinating historic town, making it a destination that is unforgettable in more ways than one.
