From acoustic instruments to electric models, guitars have played an important role in shaping the story of modern music. Electric guitars were especially influential in the rise of rock ’n’ roll during the 1950s and eventually became one of the defining symbols of the genre.
No matter what style of music you prefer, it’s difficult to think about legendary guitarists without also remembering the distinctive instruments they played on their most memorable recordings. In some cases, the guitars themselves became nearly as recognizable as the musicians who played them.
Here are six of the most recognizable guitars in music history.
1. Prince’s “Cloud”
Prince’s iconic white “Cloud” guitar was custom-made by luthier David Rusan in the early 1980s. Its smooth, flowing shape quickly became associated with the musician, especially after the instrument appeared prominently in the film Purple Rain. Its distinctive appearance eventually led Schecter to produce versions of the famous design.
2. Gibson SG
Introduced in the early 1960s, the Gibson SG became instantly recognizable thanks to its distinctive double-cutaway body. Like other Gibson guitars, the SG was developed with a strong emphasis on tone, construction quality, and craftsmanship. Its impressive performance made it a favorite among rock musicians, including Carlos Santana and Angus Young, who used the instrument while creating some of their biggest hits.
3. Gene Simmons’ “Axe” Bass
Gene Simmons’ “Axe” bass was designed to make a dramatic impression. Shaped to resemble a battleaxe, the unusual instrument perfectly complemented Simmons’ energetic stage presence and helped him deliver the hard-rock sound associated with Kiss beginning in the late 1970s. Its aggressive design also fit naturally with the band's extravagant costumes and theatrical performances.
4. Gretsch White Falcon
The Gretsch White Falcon is one of those guitars that is difficult to forget. Its bright white body, gold accents, and distinctive falcon-inspired detailing give it an unmistakable appearance. The instrument was more than visually striking, however. Its impressive tone also made it popular with renowned guitarists, including Chet Atkins and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
5. Neil Young’s “Old Black” Gibson Les Paul
Neil Young’s “Old Black” is a Goldtop Gibson Les Paul that has undergone numerous modifications and personal touches throughout the years. Its dark finish and unmistakable appearance have become closely connected with Young’s musical identity. The customized electric guitar has appeared on most of his studio albums, making it an important part of his recording history.
6. Paul McCartney’s Höfner Bass
Paul McCartney’s famous Höfner bass features a symmetrical body inspired by the shape of a violin. The model was first introduced during the mid-1950s and later became inseparable from McCartney’s image as a member of the Beatles. During the band’s tours, McCartney regularly played the instrument while performing many of the group’s most beloved songs.
